Tallman school district

Subject

Rockland County - Tallman

Description

In 1873, the Tallman School District #13 was formed. John Garrison, one of the trustees, donated the land upon which the present Cherry Lane School stands. There have been many buildings named Cherry Lane School in Tallman, N.Y. This is the third school which stood near the road from 1889 to 1912. It was later moved one lot away to the corner of Heather Drive, where it became the home of Mr. & Mrs. Shevlin who were the grandparents of retired teacher and principal Bill Malone. It was a one room school for grades one through eight. The privy on the left was for boys; the girls used the one on the right. In front of the school are the teachers and students who include Elmer Post, Hazel Smith Martin, and Charles Ackerson. Published 1997 in a calendar of historic images.
