OBITUARY

AARON L. CHRISTIE. It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of the most useful and highly respected citizens Nyack has ever known— Aaron L. Christie, the Postmaster here. Mr. Christie, as the most of our readers know, had been confined to his house by illness for many weeks. At times he grew better, but would then fail again, and on Thursday morning of this week, at a little past 4 o'clock, he passed away. Deceased was a resident of Nyack for forty-five years and during that time he was identified with every movement that tended to as improve the place. He was one of the most untiring workers for the good of the community we have ever seen, and his death leaves a vacancy that will he hard to fill. He was one of the stanchest and most zealous Republicans to be found anywhere, and was appointed Postmaster by President Lincoln in 1861, which position he has held by reappointment ever since.— The duties of his office were performed by him with the strictest honesty, and his character was above reproach. He was Chairman of the Republican County Central Committee, of this county, for sixteen years, and in that capacity he served in such a faultless manner as to gain the just commendation of every member of his party. His counsel and advice in all matters relating to National, State and County ty politics was always relied upon as being both substantial and good. He has been also a member of the Board of Education for thirty years, and we unhesita tingly say that the existence of the splendid public school in this village is due more to him than to any other man. As a citizen generally Mr. Christie was highly respected, and we know that every one in this place will join with us in saying that not one of Nyack's inhabitants could be missed more than he. He was nearly 68 years of age. His funeral will take place from the Reformed Church to-morrow (Sunday) at 1:30 o'clock.
