DORIS NEST

"My memories really are from the little town that I was
raised in, Haverstraw. Walking to school — I went to
parochial school — and walking through the town every
day to go to school... You'd walk into town and see the
Mardorf bakery... the Haverstraw Times, our local newspaper. From there we'd wander up to school
and pass the Vandenburgh silvershop... We were always talking about getting married, and I always wanted to get married at St. Patrick's Cathedral, which I did. But my wedding cake came from Mardorfs, my invitations were printed from the Haverstraw Times and many of my wedding presents came from Vandenburgh's. It all tied together.

"We lived right on the Hudson River, and I remember
seeing my brother skating right across the Hudson."

Nest, a retired deputy commissioner of elections in
Rockland County, is the vice chairman of the Clarkstown
Republican Committee and volunteers at Nyack
Hospital. She lives in New City.
